About University

With the constitution of its first Senate on October 30, 1979, the University of Cadiz (UCA) was born, thus culminating a long process of vindication of a university institution that recovers, for Cadiz and its province, the fruitful tradition of higher education initiated and developed under the protection of maritime and commercial activities in the modern and contemporary ages. The historical background of higher education in Cadiz dates back to the 15th century, when the College of Pilots of the Levant and Poniente Seas was created, within the scope of the Vizcaínos brotherhood, whose studies of cosmography and mathematics achieved great notoriety and prestige as certified by the Brief Treatise on the Sphera and Art of Navigating, by Martín Cortés, printed in Seville in 1545, and the Analysis Geométrico by Antonio Hugo de Omerique -which saw the light in 1698- as an expression of the Nautical Chair that had existed in the College of Santiago since 1682. of the Society of Jesus, founded in 1566.
